These are formed by the continual thawing and refreezing of melting snow. Large masses of ice develop as snow on the upper part of the roof melts. The water runs under the snow and refreezes at the edge of the roof. Additional snow melts and forms pools against the dam, gradually causing water to back up the roof often getting under the shingles and eventually leaking into the house. Our staff will help prevent this damaging process.

Flashing

Some of the roof's most vulnerable areas with the highest potential for leaks include skylights, vents, chimneys, windows, and soil stacks, making waterproofing indispensable. Ice and water membranes are superb bases for underlayment of flashing material. Free Spirit Construction recommends installing proper metal flashings at these areas.

Roof Decks

Making sure the appropriate roof deck is under the shingles you have to install is critical to ensure optimal shingle performance. The roof deck should be in good condition, dry, clean, flat, smooth, and securely nailed.
Plywood decks at least a half-inch thick are usually best. If shingles are installed over an unacceptable roof deck, it may void the manufacturer's warranty. Any part of the deck that is rotted or warped must be replaced.
